i am not yet at peace with the fact i went to school for marketing instead of art. i was determined ever since i was a little girl to become an artist, but my parents advised me to major in business instead- as it would lead to more opportunities and i wouldn’t be another “starving artist.” thinking they knew best, i did as they suggested and 5 years later everyone, including my peers who are also artists, agrees that it was a smart decision to learn the ins and outs of business.
looking back, i am grateful for my education and i do think having such a broad degree is helpful in the long run, but as my time in school went by, i just couldn’t let my true self get lost in my journey to higher education. i had to find a way to incorporate what it was i really wanted to do. i decided that after i transferred to rutgers university, i would join the marketing program and get into advertising.
unfortunately, i didn’t realize that in that program, i would not be learning anything artistically related to advertising. i learned it was up to me to continue to do art on the side, hone my craft, and build a portfolio to showcase my talent and growth.
about me.
on a day without any initial significance, my grandmother decided to give me a book on claude monet, an impressionist painter. she had been paying attention to my talent for drawing and coloring and decided to help fuel my growth. it was so inspiring that after seeing his work at the impressionable age of 10, i added being an artist to my already long aspiration- to be an astronaut/model/singer/actress/veterinarian. i attended joined the art club at my middle school, attended a performing arts high school (creative arts morgan village academy) as an art major, and worked as an assistant art teacher at a summer program, all in the name of art.
although i know times are moving to more digital media, i will always say graphite is my first favorite. besides graphite, however, my works within the last 4 years include collage, traditional and digital painting, photography, and video and share the theme of identity.
